PENS & PENCILS - Coast Banksia (Banksia integrifolia)

Learn about this timber

Banksia grows along the east coast of Australia. One of the most widely distributed Banksia species, it occurs between Victoria and Central Queensland in a broad range of habitats, from coastal dunes to mountains. It is highly variable in form, but is most often encountered as a tree up to 25 metres (82 ft) in height. Its leaves have dark green upper surfaces and white undersides, a contrast that can be striking on windy days.

It is one of 170 species in the Proteaceae family, in which Silky Oak is also a member. The two timbers are very similar in structure, Banksia being much darker and with smaller cell size. See the comparison photos below.

The Banksia trees in my front yard attract bees, nectar eating birds, and our native Black Cockatoo that crack open the cones to eat the seeds. These pens are made from prunings from my own trees.
