PENS, PENCILS - Cypress Pine (Callitris)

Learn about this timber

There are 16 recognized species in the genus, of which 13 are native to Australia and the other three are native to New Caledonia.  Callitris trees are commonly called cypress pines because they are related to, and resemble, northern hemisphere cypresses. However, they are not true pines.

Tannin, sandarac resin, and fragrant oils can be extracted from the trees, and several species are grown as ornamentals. The timber has a strong smell and is resistant to termite and insect attack. The Aboriginal people used it for topical medicines, and the smoke from burning the bark kept mosquitoes and other insects away. It was commonly used in the 1960s and 1970s for flooring and weatherboard. It is still sold in sizes for outdoor garden fencing and gates because it weathers well.

These pens and set were made from a piece of timber I found washed up on a beach after a storm.
