All our Huon Pine pens are handcrafted from legally harvested timber from Tasmania. Huon Pine is a protected species that is native only to Tasmania, and the timber is becoming more expensive and more difficult to get. It can only be sourced under strict licensing from fallen and dead trees in a small area of the Australian State. Underwater harvesting has been taking place since 2015 in the valleys that were flooded when hydro-electric dams were built. The trees are very slow growing and have very fine growth rings and tight grain structure. Some trees have been dated to over 3,000 years old, making the Huon Pine the second oldest species in the world.
Huon Pine is an absolute pleasure to work with and has a sweet buttery smell. The timber is prized for woodturning, small cabinets and jewellry boxes, cheese boards and other ornamental items. I made the grand piano musicbox (pictured right) for my wife using Huon Pine and Blackwood.
