Kohekohe is a medium-sized tree native to New Zealand. It is found in lowland and coastal forests throughout most of the North Island and also occurs in the Marlborough Sounds in the north of the South Island. Mature trees grow up to 15 metres (49 ft) in height, with a trunk up to a metre in diameter.
A fairly close relative of true mahogany (Swietenia), it is also called New Zealand mahogany, because its wood is light, strong and polishes to a fine red colour. Kohekohe forests used to be common in damp coastal and lowland areas in the North Island, but these forests have mostly disappeared because the land was used for settlement or they were browsed by possums. Studies have shown rapid recovery in kohekohe canopy after implementation of possum control.
Māori boiled the bark in water and drank it as a tonic. The wood was used for building canoes but is soft and not as durable as other woods and tends to rot quickly. It is valued for carving. The timber for these pens come from this repurposed magazine rack that I made in evening woodworking classes in 1979.
#1 Slim shape and gold hardware work together well for the colour of the timber, and give a special warmth to this pen/pencil set. Over time the timber will darken and become even more attractive. The storage/display case is hand-made from Camphor Laurel with Spotted gum sides. $95 |
#2 Slender straight styling is ideal for those with fine hands. The gun metal hardware contrasts nicely with the rich colours in the timber.

#4 Slender styling and gentle curves make this a comfortable pen to hold, and the extra thickness of timber adds more weight so you don't need to press as firmly as you would with a slimmer pen. The polished copper hardware brings out the rich colours in the timber.

#5 Another fine example of the beauty found in New Zealand Mahogany. Smooth end-to-end shaping and ringed waistband make this a very attractive and comfortable pen to hold and write with.
