PENS, PENCILS - Hairy Oak (Allocasuarina inophloia)

Learn about this timber

Usually a shrub or small tree, hairy oak has unique bark that has given rise to a number of different common names, such as stringybark oak and woolly oak. and is endemic to inland New South Wales and Queensland.

Despite its name, hairy oak is not a true oak in the Quercus genus, but is part of the unrelated Allocasuarina genus commonly known as sheoaks.

The timber is widely prized by woodworkers for it's distinctive marking, and is quite expensive to buy. The timber for these pens came from a friend.
