PENS, PENCILS - Red Cedar (Toona ciliatavar)

Learn about this timber

Australian red cedar is possibly Australia's most celebrated native timber. Soon after European settlement the cedar cutters began scouring the rainforests up and down the east coast from south of Sydney to the Atherton Tablelands in search of huge cedar logs. The trees generally grow to 40 metres tall with 1.5 metre trunk diameter. The loggers were so effective that the species was almost made extinct.

Red Cedar has a light, fine-grained timber with a beautiful even deep-red colour. The heartwood is naturally durable, dries without splitting and is easy to work. Furniture, cabinetry, veneer, musical instruments (guitar tops), and boatbuilding is where a lot of this timber has been used.

These pens were made from timber removed from a friend's heritage listed house during renovations. With the wax finish applied the timber goes very dark.

#1 Slim curved shape and chrome hardware make the richness of the timber stand out. Red Cedar naturally has a fairly open texture so does not finish to the smoothness and high sheen obtained with dense timbers.
