PENS, PENCILS - Tasmanian Myrtle "Tiger Myrtle" (Nothofagus cunninghamii)

Learn about this timber

Myrtle beech or Tasmanian myrtle, is an evergreen tree that is the dominant species of cool temperate rainforests in Tasmania and Southern Victoria. It has rough bark covered in mosses and epiphytic growth. It has low fire resistance and grows best in partial shade conditions.

Heights range from trees of up to 50 meters in protected rainforest valleys to low-growing alpine shrubs less than 1 m tall in exposed conditions. Maximum height is about 55m.

Uncommon examples that have dark stripes in the timber caused by fungal discoloration, are given the name of 'tiger myrtle' due to its tiger stripe-like appearance. Demand is high for this fungal-affected wood due to its beauty, and it is expensive to buy. Photos below show how striking the appearance is.
